		{"id":38719,"date":"2020-11-10T19:01:34","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T18:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/?page_id=38719"},"modified":"2025-09-24T12:13:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T10:13:11","slug":"er-dy-lab","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/research\/er-dy-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"Er-Dy LAB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Er-Dy LAB focuses on many-body quantum phenomena in a dipolar quantum mixture of two highly magnetic lanthanides, Erbium and Dysprosium.<\/p>\r\n<p>The designing process of the experimental apparatus started in late 2014 and several concepts have been developed in collaboration with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/research\/erbium-lab\/\">ERBIUM Team<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/greiner.physics.harvard.edu\/er\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Er-Team<\/a> at Harvard University led by Markus Greiner.<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Er-Dy mixtures<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>In 2018, we produced the <strong>first quantum degenerate dipolar mixture of Erbium and Dysprosium<\/strong> <strong>[1]<\/strong>. Our setup can operate with either species alone or with <strong>Bose\u2013Bose, Bose\u2013Fermi, and Fermi\u2013Fermi mixtures<\/strong>. By carefully controlling the <strong>dipole orientation<\/strong>, we demonstrated <strong>tunable interspecies interactions [2]<\/strong>, providing a foundation for exploring <strong>miscibility\u2013immiscibility, quantum droplets, and supersolids<\/strong> in heteronuclear dipolar gases.<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Supersolids<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Dipolar gases can form <strong>supersolids<\/strong>, states that combine the frictionless flow of a superfluid with the crystalline order of a solid. In 2019, a <strong>long-lived supersolid<\/strong> was realized through a collaboration between the <strong>Er-Dy LAB<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/research\/erbium-lab\/\">ERBIUM LAB<\/a>, and theory collaborators at IQOQI<strong> [3]<\/strong>. Building on this, we achieved the <strong>first two-dimensional supersolid [4]<\/strong>, and studied its <strong>phase coherence [5], collective excitations, and non-equilibrium dynamics<\/strong>, revealing how superfluidity and crystalline order coexist in complex, tunable quantum systems.<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Vortices<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>We have investigated <strong>quantized vortices and vortex patterns<\/strong> in dipolar quantum gases, revealing how superfluid flow interacts with dipolar interactions.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>In <strong>dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates<\/strong>, we observed <strong>vortex stripes<\/strong>, where alternating rows of vortices emerge due to the anisotropic dipolar interaction <strong>[6]<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<li>In dipolar <strong>supersolids<\/strong>, we detected vortices embedded within the supersolid structure, providing a direct <strong>demonstration of superfluidity <\/strong>coexisting with crystalline order<strong> [7]<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>These studies open the door to simulating <strong>exotic rotating systems<\/strong>, including scenarios relevant to <strong>neutron-star physics<\/strong>, as suggested by our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/research\/theory-group\/\">Theory Group<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>A microscope for dipolar atoms<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>We are developing a <strong>quantum gas microscope for highly magnetic atoms [8]<\/strong>, enabling single-atom resolution in optical lattices. Unlike conventional microscopes, ours is designed for atoms with strong, long-range dipole-dipole interactions, opening access to a completely new class of quantum systems. The inter-atomic dipole-dipole interaction adds a new term to the Hamiltonian describing the ensemble, and therefore allows us to investigate a whole new class of quantum systems. The behavior of the system will critically depend on the interplay between the different interaction terms, whose magnitude and direction dependence may be tuned experimentally over a wide range.
