		{"id":36479,"date":"2018-02-26T18:18:58","date_gmt":"2018-02-26T17:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/?p=36479"},"modified":"2020-10-14T15:38:57","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T13:38:57","slug":"two-species-five-beam-magneto-optical-trap-for-erbium-and-dysprosium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/two-species-five-beam-magneto-optical-trap-for-erbium-and-dysprosium\/","title":{"rendered":"The magic of Er and Dy: magneto-optical trap with only 5 beams!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/pra\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevA.97.023633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Now in Physical Review A!<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/DoubleMOT.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-36481 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/DoubleMOT.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"574\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/DoubleMOT.png 714w, https:\/\/www.erbium.at\/FF\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/DoubleMOT-300x203.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As the first result of our new Erbium-Dysprosium mixture experiment RARE, we achieved for the first time the simultaneous trapping of Erbium and Dysprosium atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). <!--more-->We prove that an efficient and stable operation of both species is possible in a<br \/>\nconvenient, single-source line experiment, which provides a great<br \/>\nstarting condition for future quantum gas experiments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A peculiar feature of this MOT setup is its 5-beam geometry: Due to the<br \/>\nnarrow transition used for the trapping of the atoms and the atoms&#8217;<br \/>\nlarge mass, it is not necessary to provide a confining laser beam from<br \/>\ntop to bottom. This leaves a large optical access and allows future<br \/>\nexperiments with a high-resolution imaging without the need of an<br \/>\noptical transport.
