Nature Physics: Top publication honored

05/11/202007/10/2020 by Francesca Ferlaino
A cigar-shaped gas of magnetic atoms can support a roton mode: a modulation in the atom spatial organization at a given wavelength, forming a saddle on the energy mountain ridge of its elementary excitations.

Our publication on the first-time observation of roton quasiparticles in quantum gases was chosen by the editors of Nature Physics as one of their favorite papers of the past 15 years.

Lattice-confined dipolar fermions exchange spin d.o.f. !

12/11/202019/04/2020 by FF

Now in Physical Review Research!

In joint theoretical and experimental work with our theory colleagues A.-M. Rey (JILA) and B. Zhu (ITAMP) we investigate dipolar induced magnetization-conserving spin exchange dynamics with fermionic Er in a 3D optical lattice. Our work is now published in Physical Review Research.

Excitation spectrum of a trapped dipolar supersolid

14/10/202002/08/2019 by FF

Now in Physical Review Letter!

In a combined theory and experimental work, we study the elementary excitations of trapped dipolar quantum gases crossing from regular superfluid to supersolid. Our work is now published in PRL and summarized in the Synopsis by Sophia Chen.

Rotonic excitation spectrum observed in a dipolar quantum gas

14/10/202008/05/2019 by FF

Now in Physical Review Letter!

In quantum physics, the spectrum of elementary excitations dictates the way a quantum system behaves and reacts to perturbations. Hence, in superfluids, the possibility of frictionless flow is encoded in their excitation spectrum.

Long-lived supersolid behavior

14/10/202023/04/2019 by FF

Now in Physical Review X!

In a joint work from the RARE and ERBIUM team as well as our theory collaborator from IQOQI, Rick van Bijnen, we have observed hallmarks of supersolidity in dipolar quantum gases of Erbium and Dysprosium. Our work is highlighted in a Viewpoint article in Physics by T. Donner.

First strongly interacting dipolar Fermi gas!

14/10/202031/08/2018 by FF

Now in Physical Review Letter!

In our Erbium experiment, we have created the first two component dipolar Fermi gas with tunable interactions. This paves the way to studies of BEC-BCS physics in presence of an unprecedented few-body scattering scenario, including anisotropic long-range dipolar interactions and anisotropic short-range interactions.
