Group retreat to Grenoble (FR)

The whole group moved to France to the mountain region of Grenoble to attend the special lecture within the “Cécile DeWitt-Morette / School of Physics Houches” prize (more info here). In this occasion, Francesca received the medal from l’Université Grenoble Alpes and gave a talk following the lecture from the Nobel laureate Kip Thorne.

During these days of retreat, we had the chance to discuss a lot of physics, future projects and updates from all the labs. Nice mountain hikes and good French cheeses have been always with us, of course.

“Cécile DeWitt-Morette” prize awarded to Francesca Ferlaino

The “Cécile DeWitt-Morette / School of Physics Houches” prize of the French Academy of Sciences was created in 2019 to honor the memory of Cécile DeWitt-Morette, notable scientist and founder of the École de Physique des Houches in 1951.

Francesca won the first edition for the “remarkable work on ultra-cold atom gases” ranging from the early investigation on Efimov physics to the more recent results on dipolar quantum gases of Erbium and Erbium-Dysprosium.

Last week Francesca Ferlaino has received the Junior BEC Award 2019 for her “pioneering work on Bose-Einstein condensation of dipolar Erbium atoms and more generally degenerate quantum gases with long-range interactions and for realizing novel quantum phases of matter with such systems”.
The award, honoring outstanding achievements in the field of Bose-Einstein condensation, was presented at the international BEC Conference in Sant Feliu de de Guíxols.

Francesca Ferlaino named APS Fellow 2019

Experimental physicist Francesca Ferlaino was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in September. With the Fellowship, the members of the Society honor outstanding scientific achievements of their colleagues. The outstanding work of the physicist was just recently honored with the Junior BEC Award in Spain.
